Women need specialist supportto address addiction and substance misuse
Women in prison and in contact with the criminal justice system are more at risk of developing drug, alcohol or substance dependencies than average and need specialist interventions and targeted support to address and overcome their substance misuse.
Specialist substance misuse services and programmes aim to support women and girls who are experiencing, or who are at risk of developing addictions to drug, alcohol or other substances.
These may include:
- Delivering awareness programmes to help women identify the triggers and root causes of addiction and better understand their relationship with substances
- Services and techniques for managing consumption and dependency and making conscious changes, evaluating risks, and developing action plans to support recovery
- Support for those undergoing drug and alcohol cessation or intervention treatments and recovering from addiction
- Counselling and advocacy support for recovering addicts
