Women supporting other womencan have a hugely positive impact
Peer to peer support and mentoring services can help to empower women, connect those with similar lived and learned experiences of the criminal justice system, and provide opportunities for women to find volunteer and paid work when they leave prison or resettle into the community.
Peer support is when people with similar experiences connect and support each other. Women can access peer support services in many different ways, including;
- Through community, support group and self-help groups
- In women’s centres and women only spaces
- Via the internet, online communities and social media platforms like Facebook
- Through befriending or mentoring services
Peer to peer support services aim to bring women with shared experiences together, in facilitated female only spaces where women feel safe, accepted and understood. Peer to peer support services value everyone’s experiences and can inspire women and girls to feel more empowered and able to go on to give and receive further support from others.
