Referral Information
WomenMATTA primarily takes referrals from police, probation and prisons
• Police – WomenMATTA take referrals from police under their ‘Triage’ scheme. Triage is a partnership between Greater Manchester police and WomenMATTA based on the idea that giving a women support is more affective at stopping her reoffending, then giving her a criminal record. Women who meet the criteria are referred when they arrested, and instead of being charged, they may be given a conditional caution to engage with WomenMATTA. Women can also be referred voluntarily by police, or more commonly NHS employed ‘Liaison and Diversion’ staff based in custody suites.
• Probation – probation is now divided into 2 separate bodies; the Community Rehabilitation Company, or ‘CRC’, who manage low and medium risk offenders and the National Probation Service, or ‘NPS’ who manage high risk offenders. WomenMATTA co-deliver multi agency ‘Women’s Hub’s with the CRC for all women serving community orders where women serving community orders can see their probation office, WomenMATTA worker and various other agencies at the same time.
• Prison – Women in Prison employs 2 Prison Link Workers who are based at HMP Styal. They provide ‘Through the Gate’ support to women leaving prison and returning to Greater Manchester. This involves providing support prior to release, collected women on the day of their release, and supporting them to settle back into their community, including referring and linking them in to WomenMATTA (or other women’s services in other areas of Greater Manchester).
